How it works. Our server asks each site for the public profile address of that username and reads the answer, using open-source site lists (WhatsMyName, Sherlock, Maigret). Results stream in as they arrive. How it works
Privacy. The web tool sends the username to our server only to run the check. It is not stored or logged. Privacy policy
Results are leads to verify, not facts about a person. Look up only usernames you have a legitimate reason to research.
What this username search engine does
WhatsMyName Apps checks one username against 3,166 public websites at the same time and shows you, live, where a profile with that exact name exists. It covers social networks, coding sites, gaming platforms, music and video services, forums, shopping sites and more (see all supported sites). It works as a free username lookup and a social media username search: type a handle and it finds public profiles by username. People use it in two ways:
- Find accounts that use a handle. Audit your own digital footprint, find old accounts you forgot about, or, for legitimate research, see where a username appears in public. Our digital footprint check and OSINT username search guides show how to do this well.
- Check if a username is available. Before you launch a brand, channel or gamer tag, see where the name is already taken and where it is still free, plus whether the matching .com, .net, .org, .io, .us, .app and .dev domains are open. The name checker puts both side by side.
It is free, needs no account, and works in any modern browser on desktop or phone.
How to search by username in 4 steps
- Type a username in the box above, or paste a profile link and we pull the username out of it. You can check up to 5 usernames at once, separated by commas.
- Optional: pick categories such as social, gaming or coding to narrow the scan.
- Watch results stream in. About 16 checks run in parallel, so most of the scan finishes in under a minute.
- Review, filter and export. Switch between grid, list and table views, filter by status, open any profile, then export everything to JSON or CSV or copy all found links.
The step-by-step guide has screenshots of every option.
What the results mean
Every site gets one of four statuses. Most checkers show only “taken” or “available”, which hides the cases where the check itself failed.
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Found | A public profile page exists at that site’s address for this username. | Open it and confirm it is the account you expect. |
| Not found | The site reported no profile with that name. | The name is probably free there; confirm on the site’s sign-up page. |
| Blocked | The site refused our automated check (rate limits, bot protection or a login wall). | Unknown either way. Retry later or check by hand. |
| Unknown | The response was ambiguous or timed out. | Press Retry failed, or check that site directly. |
For found profiles we also show the public display name, avatar and bio when the site provides them, so you can compare accounts without opening each one. That is what we mean by a deep username search. Starting from a handle and asking where else it is used is a reverse username lookup. An email checker is coming soon. How it works lists what our server requests and why a result can be wrong.
Treat a match as a lead
The same username on two sites does not mean the same person owns both accounts. Short and common names are claimed by many unrelated people. A “found” result tells you where to look. Verify it with independent signals such as a matching photo, a linked website or a consistent join date. Only look up usernames you have a legitimate reason to research: your own, your brand’s, or ones that are part of authorized work. Read our responsible-use guidelines.
Sites and categories covered
Our list merges three open-source datasets, WhatsMyName, Sherlock and Maigret (credits and licenses), then removes duplicates. That gives about 1,600 social and community sites, roughly 300 coding and tech sites, 200 gaming platforms, and hundreds more across video, music, art, finance, shopping and blogging. Popular U.S. platforms are included, among them Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, GitHub, Snapchat, Pinterest, Steam, Roblox and Spotify. Browse the full list by category or jump to a single-platform checker.
WhatsMyName Apps is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the WhatsMyName project, Sherlock, Maigret or any site it checks.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free social media username search?
Yes, this one. It searches social media and 3,166 other sites for a username in one go, for free and without an account. Results are public profile pages only.
What is a deep username search?
A search that goes beyond "taken or free": for every account found, we also fetch the public display name, avatar, bio and, where available, follower count and join date, so you can judge whether accounts belong together.
Can I do a user lookup by user ID?
You can look up a user by the public username (handle) that appears in profile links. Numeric account IDs differ on every site and are not supported. To search for a username, type it above or paste a profile link and we pull the handle out of it.
Is this username search free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no paywall and no limit on how many results you see. A per-minute rate limit protects the service from abuse.
Do you store the usernames I search?
No. Your browser sends the username to our server only to run the check; we do not store or log it. Recent searches stay in your own browser, and you can clear them anytime. Details are in our privacy policy.
Can I check if a username is available on Instagram or TikTok?
Yes, both are in the scan. Large platforms sometimes block automated checks, so you may see "Blocked" instead of "Not found." In that case, confirm on the platform itself before you rely on the result.
Why does a site show "Found" when I don't have an account there?
Someone else may use the same name, or the site may return a page for any name. Open the link to check, and use "Report wrong result" so we can fix the site's rule.
How is this different from Namechk, KnowEm or Sherlock?
Namechk and KnowEm focus on availability across around 100–500 sites. Sherlock is a command-line tool for about 400 sites. We check 3,166 sites in the browser, show four statuses so a failed check is not reported as "available", and add profile details and export.
Can I find who is behind a username?
No. This tool only shows where a public profile with that name exists. It does not reveal identities, emails, phone numbers or private data.
