Ignorant explained: what a phone number check reveals
Ignorant comes from the same author as Holehe, but works on phone numbers instead of email addresses. This page explains what it can learn and how to make your own number less useful to tools like it. It is educational and defensive, not a guide to researching other people.

What is Ignorant?
Ignorant is a Python project released under GPL-3.0. Its README says it checks whether a phone number is used on sites such as Snapchat and Instagram, and lists three modules (Amazon, Instagram and Snapchat) that use login, sign-up or other responses. It says the target number is not alerted.
As with email enumeration, the weakness is a page that answers differently for a registered number. Each module also reports whether it was rate-limited, since these sites limit repeated checks.
As of October 2026 the last push to the repository was in July 2024. WhatsMyName Apps does not offer phone number enumeration; our phone tools are listed as coming soon and are not live.
Why it matters for your privacy
- Confirming that a number has an account on a shopping or social app tells a stranger what you use.
- Phone numbers drive account recovery, so a linked number helps SIM-swap and recovery attacks.
- Your number can tie together accounts you keep under different names.
- You are not notified when someone checks.
How to protect yourself
- In each app's privacy settings, stop people from finding you by phone number and turn off contact syncing you do not need.
- Use a secondary or virtual number for shopping and sign-ups that do not need your real one.
- Ask your carrier for a port-out PIN or SIM lock.
- Prefer app-based or security-key two-factor authentication over SMS codes.
- Remove your number from public profiles, bios and listings.
