How to See Previous Usernames on Instagram
By WhatsMyName Apps · Published · 7 min read · Editorial policy
People ask how to see previous usernames on Instagram for all sorts of reasons. Maybe an account you followed years ago looks different now. Maybe a seller or a new match has a handle that feels too fresh. Or you changed your own name a few times and want a record of what you used. The answer depends on whose account it is, and Instagram shows a lot less than many guides suggest.
What "About this account" shows
About this account is Instagram's transparency panel. Meta added it so people can judge whether an account is what it claims to be, and it is the only official place to check ig username history on a profile you do not own. Instagram's help article, What is "About this account", lists what you see when you are logged in:
- Date joined: when the account was created.
- Former username count: the number of times the username has been changed. The help center says plainly that you see the count "but not the former usernames themselves."
For certain accounts, usually larger ones, Instagram may also show:
- Account based in: a country worked out from the account's activity.
- Accounts with shared followers: public accounts with the most followers in common.
- Active ads: a link to the account's ads in the Meta Ad Library.
- Verified: whether the account is verified.
So if your question is how to check old usernames on Instagram for another person, the honest answer is that Instagram tells you how many, not which. A count of 0 means the handle you see is the one the account started with. A count of 6 on an account that joined last month is worth noticing.
How to open it, step by step
- Log in to Instagram. The panel is not shown to logged-out visitors.
- Open the profile you want to check.
- Tap the three dots (⋯) in the top corner of the profile.
- Tap About this account.
- Look for the former usernames line and the date joined.
Menus move between app versions, so if you cannot find it, update the app. The panel also appears on Threads profiles, since the two apps share it.
Why older guides say you can see the names
If you search how to see old Instagram usernames, you will find step-by-step articles that end with "tap Former usernames to see the list." Some of those were written when Instagram displayed more. The current help center describes a count only, and that matches what the app shows today. Treat any guide that promises a full list of ig former usernames from inside the app as out of date.
How to see past usernames on your own account
Your own account is the easy case, and the steps for how to see past usernames on Instagram are short. Instagram keeps a log of changes you made, and you can read it at any time. Its help article on seeing your account history describes the path:
- Open your profile and tap the menu (three lines).
- Tap Your activity.
- Tap Account history and scroll.
The list covers changes you made to the account, such as a new username or password, and you can sort it and filter it by date or type of change. That is the reliable way to see past usernames on Instagram when the account is yours. For a permanent copy, you can also request a download of your information through Accounts Center, under Your information and permissions.
Once you know your old handles, search them across other sites. People often reused a handle on forums, games and shopping sites and forgot about it. A free username search across 3,165+ sites shows where each old name still has a public profile. Our guide to finding old accounts covers what to do next.
Do online username history checkers work?
Search for an instagram username history checker online free and you will find plenty of sites that promise to reveal every past name. Before you paste a username into one, know what they can and cannot do.
- They cannot read Instagram's private records. If Instagram itself hides former usernames from logged-in users, an outside site has no special door to them.
- Some keep their own snapshots. A site that saved a profile in the past can show the handle it saw then. That only works for accounts it happened to record, and you have no way to check how complete it is.
- Some are fronts for other things. An Instagram previous username checker that asks you to log in with your Instagram password, install an app or complete a survey first is a red flag. Never give your login to a third-party viewer.
An instagram former username checker that claims certainty should be treated with suspicion. At best, these tools give you leads. Instagram's own count is the only number you can trust.
Other honest ways to find old Instagram usernames
If you have a real reason to know an account's earlier name, such as checking whether a brand account was repurposed or confirming a public figure's history, a few methods stay within public information.
Public web archives
The Wayback Machine stores snapshots of some public pages. If you already suspect an old handle, look up instagram.com/oldname there and see what the snapshot showed. Coverage of Instagram is patchy, and many profiles were never captured, so a miss proves nothing.
Old links, tags and mentions
When an account is renamed, old @mentions in other people's captions do not update. A caption from 2021 that tagged @oldname may now lead nowhere, which is a clue on its own. Links in old blog posts, YouTube descriptions and press articles often keep the old handle too.
The same handle on other sites
Creators who rename on Instagram often keep the old handle on TikTok, X or a link page. Searching a suspected old name across many sites can turn up the matching profile. Our Instagram username checker handles the Instagram side and lists the current handle rules. Remember that a matching name on two sites is a lead, not proof of one owner.
Reading the former username count
The count is most useful as a quick authenticity check. A few patterns worth knowing:
- Young account, many changes. An account that joined recently and has changed its handle several times may have been bought, repurposed or used for scams. Buying and selling accounts breaks Instagram's terms, but it still happens.
- Old account, new niche. A profile with years of history and a recent handle change might be a person who rebranded. Or it might be a hacked account turned into a giveaway page. Look at the oldest posts.
- Zero changes. The handle has not changed since signup. That says nothing about whether the person is real, only that the name is original.
Combine the count with the date joined and the "account based in" line if it appears. A shop claiming to be local that is based in another country, joined three weeks ago and has renamed four times deserves a closer look before you send money. Our guide to spotting fake accounts that use your name goes further.
Can you switch back to an old username?
Usually, if nobody else has claimed it. Instagram releases your old handle when you change it, so another account can take it. Check first by opening instagram.com/oldname or running it through the Instagram checker, then try it in Edit profile, which gives the final answer. If you are picking a new name instead, our Instagram username ideas post has lists to start from.
Quick answers
Can I see someone's old Instagram username?
Not inside the app. About this account shows how many times the username changed, not the earlier names. Public archives and old tags sometimes reveal one.
Does Instagram notify people when I check About this account?
Instagram's help center does not describe any notification for viewing the panel.
Can I hide or reset my former username count?
Instagram does not offer a setting to clear it.
Where do I find my own previous usernames?
In Your activity, under Account history. Your username changes are listed there with dates.
