Instagram Username Checker
Your Instagram username is the @handle in your profile link, and no two accounts can hold the same one. Type a name below to see whether instagram.com currently shows a profile at that address, then read the handle rules and your options if it is already claimed.
Instagram username rules
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Instagram suggests adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations to build a free variation. |
|---|---|
| Length | The app caps usernames at 30 characters. Instagram's help center does not publish a minimum. |
| Uniqueness | Each username belongs to one account. You can only switch back to a past name if nobody else has taken it in the meantime. |
| Change review | Accounts with a large reach may have a username change reviewed before it goes live, and followers may be notified. |
| Inactive names | Instagram does not hand over names from accounts that only look inactive; it asks you to pick a variation instead. |

How to check a Instagram username
- Enter the handle without the @ sign. Instagram treats letters case-insensitively, so there is no need to try capital versions.
- Our check loads instagram.com/<name>/ and reads the response. Instagram rate-limits anonymous traffic heavily, so a "Blocked" or "Unknown" result here is common and says nothing about the name itself.
- To confirm by hand, open instagram.com/<name>/ in a private window. "Sorry, this page isn't available" usually means no public profile uses that handle right now.
- The final word comes from the app: go to Edit profile, type the name in the Username field and wait for the check mark or the "not available" warning.
Instagram username taken? What you can do
- Try the variations Instagram itself recommends: a period between words (jane.doe), a trailing underscore, a short number, or an abbreviation.
- If the account looks abandoned, keep in mind that Instagram does not release names on request just because they seem inactive. Keep checking now and then; names can free up when accounts are deleted or renamed.
- If the handle uses your registered trademark, Instagram has a separate trademark report route in its help center. A personal name alone is not a trademark.
- Business accounts often add a role or place, such as studioname.nyc or getbrandname, which also reads well in a bio link.
How to change your Instagram username
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Tap Username and type the new handle.
- Wait for the availability indicator, then tap Done (or Submit on the web).
- If your account has a big audience, the change may sit in review until Instagram confirms it.
Reserved and restricted names
Instagram can refuse handles that impersonate people or brands, and trademark owners can report a username that infringes their mark. Handles that copy a well-known account with a period or underscore swap are a common impersonation pattern and tend to be removed.
Tips
- Keep the handle short enough to say out loud; periods are easy to miss when someone types your name from memory.
- If you also use Threads, remember that matching usernames across both apps keeps the Threads badge and cross-posting features working.
- Before a rebrand, check the new name here and on other networks first, then change Instagram last so your old handle is not left open for long.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a username from an inactive Instagram account?
Not by request. Instagram's help center says that when a name belongs to an account that seems inactive, you should choose an available variation. Names only come back if the owner changes or deletes them.
Can I switch back to my old Instagram username?
Usually, yes, as long as nobody else has claimed it and it was not recently removed from an account you do not own.
The profile page is empty, so why does Instagram say the name is unavailable?
A name can be held by a deactivated account, recently removed from another account, or blocked by policy without any public profile showing. The Username field in Edit profile runs Instagram's own availability check, so trust that answer.
