TikTok Username Checker
On TikTok, the username is the @name in tiktok.com/@name and in every duet, stitch and comment. Because you can only change it once every 30 days, it pays to check a name before you commit. Enter one below to look it up, then compare it with TikTok's own rules.
TikTok username rules
| Length | 2 to 24 characters. |
|---|---|
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods. |
| Periods | A username cannot end with a period. |

How to check a TikTok username
- Type the name without the @. Anything longer than 24 characters, or ending in a period, can be ruled out before you even search.
- We look the name up through TikTok's public embed endpoint for tiktok.com/@<name>. TikTok sometimes answers automated lookups with a challenge page, and then you will see "Blocked" rather than a real answer.
- Check by hand by opening tiktok.com/@<name>. "Couldn't find this account" points to a free name, though banned and private accounts can behave differently.
- The app is the final test: Profile, Edit profile, Username. TikTok tells you right away if someone already has it.
TikTok username taken? What you can do
- Add an underscore or a period in the middle (not at the end), for example its.mia or mia_draws.
- Add what you post about: mia.bakes, miacooks, or a city tag. Niche words also help people find you in search.
- If an account is using your trademark or pretending to be you, report it through TikTok's in-app impersonation or intellectual property reporting tools instead of trying to buy the name.
- Because changes are limited to once every 30 days, park on a good variation now and check back later instead of switching repeatedly.
How to change your TikTok username
- Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap Edit profile, then Username.
- Enter the new name and tap Save. You can do this again only after 30 days.
Reserved and restricted names
Usernames must follow TikTok's Community Guidelines, so offensive names and names that pose as another person, creator or brand can be refused or reset. Accounts that impersonate others can be reported in the app.
Tips
- Your old link stops pointing at you after a change, so update the link in your other bios on the same day.
- Underscores are hard to hear when a name is read aloud in a video; periods are easier to say ("mia dot bakes").
- Your display name can be changed separately and more freely, so put spaces, emoji or a full name there instead of in the username.
