Reddit Username Checker
Reddit usernames are permanent: once finalized you cannot change the spelling or even the capitalization, and deleted usernames are never reused. That makes a quick check before sign-up worth the effort. Enter a name below to see whether reddit.com/user/name exists.
Reddit username rules
| Changes | Once a username is finalized it cannot be changed in any way, including capitalization. |
|---|---|
| Deleted accounts | Usernames from deleted accounts are not reused by anyone, including the original owner. |
| Inactive accounts | Reddit does not hand over usernames from accounts that have not posted in a long time. |
| Length and characters | The sign-up form asks for 3 to 20 characters using letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores; Reddit's help center does not list these limits. |
| Multiple accounts | You can create a new account with a different name and keep both. |

How to check a Reddit username
- Type the name exactly as you would want it to appear, capitals included, since you can never adjust it later.
- We request reddit.com/user/<name>/about.json. Reddit is strict with automated traffic, and anonymous requests often get "Blocked," so a manual check is worth doing.
- By hand: open reddit.com/user/<name>. "Sorry, nobody on Reddit goes by that name" suggests the name was never registered; a suspended or deleted notice means it is gone for good.
- The sign-up form gives the final answer, because deleted and suspended names are unavailable even when no profile appears.
Reddit username taken? What you can do
- Add a hyphen or underscore, or a short word about your interests: mia_reads, mia-on-bikes.
- Do not wait for an inactive account to free up its name; Reddit says usernames cannot be reused, even after deletion.
- If you must have a different name, create a second account. Reddit allows more than one account per person.
- For communities rather than usernames, Reddit has a separate process (r/redditrequest) to take over abandoned subreddits.
How to change your Reddit username
- You cannot change a finalized Reddit username.
- If Reddit generated a name for you at sign-up, check your account settings soon after joining; the option to pick a different one only exists before the name is finalized.
- Otherwise, create a new account with the name you want and move your subscriptions over manually.
Reserved and restricted names
Usernames that break Reddit's Content Policy, such as names that harass, impersonate or promote hate, can lead to account suspension. Because names are never recycled, a suspended or deleted username stays unavailable permanently.
Tips
- Avoid your real full name; Reddit is pseudonymous by culture, and the name follows every comment forever.
- Check capitalization now. "MiaReads" and "miareads" look different on your profile, and you cannot fix it later.
- If you want a matching name across sites, check Reddit first, since it is the one place you cannot rename.
