Discord Username Checker
Discord replaced the old name#1234 tags with unique, lowercase usernames, so every name can belong to only one person. That makes short names scarce. Type a candidate below to test it, and use the rules from Discord's support center to shape alternatives.
Discord username rules
| Length | At least 2 and at most 32 characters. |
|---|---|
| Allowed characters | Latin letters a-z, numbers 0-9, underscore and period. No other symbols and no non-Latin characters. |
| Case sensitivity | Case-insensitive and forced to lowercase. |
| Periods | Two periods in a row are not allowed (a..b fails; .a.b. is fine). |
| Change frequency | Up to 2 times per week. Display names can be changed at any time. |

How to check a Discord username
- Type the name in lowercase. Uppercase letters are converted anyway, so "Mia" and "mia" are the same username.
- Discord has no public profile pages, so this check asks a Discord username-availability endpoint instead of loading a profile URL. Discord rate-limits those requests, so a run of "Blocked" results is normal; wait a minute and retry, or confirm in the app.
- Manual check: in Discord, open User Settings, My Account, then Edit next to Username, and type the name. Discord tells you immediately if it is taken.
Discord username taken? What you can do
- Discord's own advice is to add numbers, underscores or periods, for example mia.codes or mia_42.
- Single periods between words are allowed, but not two in a row, so mia.dev works and mia..dev does not.
- For a server or brand, add a short suffix like hq, team or studio, such as miastudio.
- If an account is impersonating you or your organization, report it to Discord Trust & Safety; Discord's rules forbid usernames that impersonate individuals, groups or Discord staff.
How to change your Discord username
- Desktop or browser: open User Settings, then My Account.
- Click Edit next to Username, type the new name and enter your password if asked.
- Mobile: tap your profile tab, then Account, then Username.
- Your account must be verified by email or phone to claim a new username.
Reserved and restricted names
Discord does not permit usernames that impersonate Discord, its staff or system messages, or that impersonate any person, group or organization. Names that attack others, promote hate or contain sexually explicit language are also refused.
Tips
- Your display name can contain spaces, capitals and emoji; keep the username plain and easy to type for friend requests.
- With two changes a week, you have room to try a name, but changing too often makes you hard to find.
- Server nicknames override your display name inside that server, so a plain username does not limit how you look in communities.
Frequently asked questions
Can two Discord users have the same username?
No. Under the current system every username is unique, and names are case-insensitive, so capitalization does not create a new one.
Can I use non-English letters in a Discord username?
No. Usernames are limited to Latin letters a-z, numbers, underscores and periods. Display names are more flexible.
How often can I change my Discord username?
Discord's support center says up to 2 times per week. Display names can be changed whenever you like.
What happened to Discord tags like #1234?
Discord phased out discriminators. Users now pick a unique lowercase username instead.
