How to check a Telegram username
- Type the name without the @, using at least 5 characters from a-z, 0-9 and underscores.
- We open t.me/<name>. A page with a profile, group or channel preview means the name is in use; a generic page usually means it is not.
- Some short names are collectibles listed on Fragment, which t.me may not show as a profile, so a short name can look free but still be owned.
- For certainty, open Telegram, go to Settings, tap your username field, and type the name; Telegram checks it as you type.
Telegram username taken? What you can do
- Add an underscore between words or a short suffix like _hq, _news or _team.
- Check Fragment to see whether a short name is a collectible that can be bought, and decide if it is worth it.
- Groups and channels use the same name pool, so a brand may already hold your name for its channel; contact them if it is a trademark issue.
- Report impersonating accounts to Telegram through the Report option in the profile menu.
How to change your Telegram username
- Open Settings and tap Edit (or tap your profile).
- Tap Username and type the new one.
- Wait for Telegram to confirm it is available, then tap the check mark.
Reserved and restricted names
Accounts that impersonate people or organizations can be reported to Telegram from the profile menu. Collectible usernames are a separate category with on-chain ownership, so they cannot be claimed through the normal settings screen once sold.
Tips
- Share both t.me/name and name.t.me links; Telegram says either opens a chat with you.
- If you do not want strangers messaging you, you can skip the username entirely.
- A channel and your personal account can each have their own username, so reserve both if you run one.
