Twitch Username Checker
Your Twitch username sets your channel address at twitch.tv/name. Renames are limited and abandoned names are held for months before anyone else can claim them, so picking right the first time matters. Look up a name below, then check Twitch's rules.
Twitch username rules
| Minimum length | At least 4 characters. Twitch's rename article does not state a maximum. |
|---|---|
| Change frequency | Once every 60 days, and not during a live broadcast or while a VOD upload is pending. |
| Released names | Names given up by non-Partner accounts take at least 180 days before they can be claimed again. |
| Partner names | A Partner's old username is not made available to anyone else. |
| Requirements | You need a verified email to change your username. |

How to check a Twitch username
- Type the name you want for twitch.tv/<name>. Anything under 4 characters will be rejected by Twitch.
- Twitch's own pages load through JavaScript, so this check reads the name from TwitchTracker, a third-party stats site. Channels that never streamed may not be listed there, so treat "Not found" as a hint, not a guarantee.
- Confirm on Twitch: open twitch.tv/<name>. A "Sorry. Unless you've got a time machine, that content is unavailable" page means no active channel is using it.
- Banned and recently released names can still be unavailable, so the Settings page is the only reliable check.
Twitch username taken? What you can do
- Add a gaming word such as plays, live, tv or gg: miaplays, mialive.
- Wait it out: names abandoned by non-Partner accounts can be reclaimed through self-service after at least 180 days.
- If a username infringes your trademark or is used for active impersonation, Twitch may transfer or reclaim it under its Username Transfer Policy.
- Do not try to swap usernames with another account owner. Twitch says this may cost both accounts their names.
How to change your Twitch username
- Open Settings, then Profile, and scroll to Profile Settings.
- Click the edit icon beside Username and type the new name; a green check means it is available.
- Confirm your password and click Verify. The change can take a few minutes to show everywhere.
Reserved and restricted names
Twitch can transfer, change, reclaim or remove a username at any time, mainly for trademark infringement or active impersonation. Usernames tied to channels Twitch banned are generally excluded and permanently unavailable.
Tips
- Your channel URL does not redirect after a rename, so update every panel, social bio and overlay that links to it.
- Affiliates and Partners keep the same ticket product name in subscription links, even after a rename.
- Twitch Support does not undo accidental renames for regular accounts, and your old name stays locked for at least 180 days.
