Old account cleanup: a self-audit plan
Most people have signed up for far more sites than they remember: a forum in high school, a game you played for a summer, a shopping site that needed an account to check out. Those profiles often still exist under the same handle. This plan walks you through finding them with a search across 3,166 sites and cleaning them up.
Free, no sign-up. Up to five usernames, 3,166 sites. The username is not stored or logged.
Why forgotten accounts are a risk
An abandoned account keeps whatever you put in it: an old photo, your hometown, a birthday, an email address you no longer check. Anyone who searches your handle can find it. If the site was ever breached, the password you used there may also be on a list attackers try against your current accounts.
Old usernames connect your accounts to each other. If you used the same handle on a gaming site and a professional network, a stranger can link the two in a minute. Cleaning up doesn't mean wiping yourself off the internet. You decide which links should exist and close the rest.
How the tool fits in
Enter up to five usernames you have used over the years and the tool checks each on 3,166 sites. Each site comes back as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown. Treat every one of them as a lead to verify, not a verdict. Found results show public profile details when available, which helps you tell your own forgotten account from a stranger who happens to share the handle.
Export the results as CSV and you have a working checklist: one row per account, ready for notes like "deleted", "password changed" or "not mine". For a broader look that includes what people can see about you beyond usernames, start at the digital footprint checker.
Step by step
- Collect your old usernames. Look through old emails for sign-up confirmations and ask yourself which handles you used for games, school, forums and early social media. Pick the five you used most.
- Search all five at once. Enter the handles separated by commas and run the search. Leave all categories on, since old accounts turn up in unexpected places.
- Confirm which accounts are yours. Open each Found profile. Look for your photos, writing or friends. Mark accounts that belong to someone else as not mine and move on.
- Decide: keep, lock or delete. Keep accounts you still use and update their privacy settings. For the rest, use the site delete option or contact its support. If you cannot get in, try password reset to the email you used then.
- Change reused passwords. If you used the same password on an old site and anywhere current, change it on the current accounts first, and turn on two-factor sign-in where offered.
- Export and recheck later. Export the CSV, note what you did for each row, and run the search again in a few months to confirm deleted profiles are gone.
Frequently asked questions
What if I cannot remember my old usernames?
Search your email archive for words like welcome, verify or confirm your account. Sign-up emails usually include the username. Our guide on finding a forgotten username covers more places to look.
Can I delete an account I no longer have access to?
Often, yes. Try the password reset first. If the old email is gone, many sites have a support form where you can prove ownership, for example with a photo you posted.
Will the tool find accounts registered with my email address?
Not yet. The email check is coming soon. Today the tool searches by username.
Is the username I search stored?
No. It is sent to our server only to run the check and is not stored or logged.
How often should I repeat the audit?
Once or twice a year is a reasonable rhythm, and again after any big change such as a job search or a move.
