How to check a Chess.com username
- Enter the name you want, using letters, numbers, underscores or dashes, and starting and ending with a letter or number.
- We query Chess.com's public data API at api.chess.com/pub/player/<name>. It returns a player record if the name exists; closed accounts may not show there.
- Check by hand at chess.com/member/<name>. A "page not found" message suggests nobody uses it.
- The rename screen in Settings is the final test, since Chess.com tells you if a name is unavailable.
Chess.com username taken? What you can do
- Add a chess word: mia_gambit, mia-endgame, MiaPlaysBlitz.
- Use a dash or underscore between words, as long as the name still begins and ends with a letter or number.
- If an account impersonates a titled player or you, report the profile or email Chess.com support.
- Plan ahead: with a 90-day limit, a temporary name stays with you for three months.

Reserved and restricted names
