Minecraft Username Checker
Minecraft: Java Edition gives every player one unique profile name, the name other players see in game and on servers. Bedrock Edition uses your Xbox gamertag instead. Type a Java name below and we ask Mojang's official profile lookup whether a player already has it.
Minecraft username rules
| Length | Java profile names can be up to 16 characters. |
|---|---|
| Allowed characters | Minecraft's help center does not list them; the name change page tells you when a name is not accepted. |
| Change frequency | Once every 30 days. You can go back to your old name after waiting 30 days. |
| Community Standards | A name that breaks the Minecraft Community Standards can be banned and removed from use by you and every other player. |
| Bedrock Edition | Bedrock uses your Xbox gamertag, which has its own rules. Use the Xbox gamertag checker for that. |

How to check a Minecraft username
- Enter the Java name. Anything over 16 characters cannot be a Java profile name.
- We ask Mojang's public profile API for that name. It answers with the player's ID when the name is in use and with a "couldn't find any profile" error when it is not. It is the official source, so the answer is usually clear.
- A name someone just gave up may not be claimable straight away even if the lookup finds nobody, and a name banned under the Community Standards stays blocked for everyone.
- The final test is the Change Profile Name page on minecraft.net, which tells you whether you can take the name.
Minecraft username taken? What you can do
- Add an underscore or a short number, or combine two words: mia_builds, miacrafts.
- Wait and check again later. Players can change names every 30 days, so popular names do move.
- Do not buy a name from another player. Minecraft accounts belong to Microsoft accounts, and trading them is against the rules.
- If you play Bedrock, your gamertag is what counts there, so check it with the Xbox gamertag checker instead.
How to change your Minecraft username
- Sign in at minecraft.net and open your profile page (All Games).
- Choose Change Profile Name, then Change Your Profile Name.
- Type the new name and confirm. You cannot change it again for 30 days.
- Let your server friends know. Some servers store whitelists and ranks by name and may need updating.
Reserved and restricted names
Minecraft does not publish a list of reserved names. Its help center says a name that does not comply with the Community Standards may be banned and removed from use by you and all other users, and that you then have to pick a new one.
Tips
- Short Java names are rare and keep their appeal, so check yours here before you build a following around a longer one.
- Minecraft lets you return to your old name after 30 days, so a rename is not a one-way door if nobody grabs it first.
- Parents: names follow the Community Standards and can be banned, so avoid real names or personal details in a child's profile name.
