How to Find Someone's Alt Twitter (X) Account

Many people run a second X account: a private one for friends, a fan account, a work account. Sometimes you have a good reason to find it, such as checking whether a harasser has returned under a new name, or confirming a public figure's backup account. This guide covers how to find someone's second Twitter account, and how to find people on Twitter in general, using only public clues.

Method 1: Search similar usernames

Alts often reuse the main handle with a small change: mia_codes becomes miacodes2, mia.priv or notmiacodes. Check the variants on X with our X username checker. Then run the main handle through our free username search, powered by our own FreeUsername™ search engine. It checks 3,450+ sites, so you may find the same person on Instagram, Threads or Bluesky, where a bio might link to the second account.

Method 2: Follow bio links and mentions

• Check the main account's bio, pinned post and link-in-bio page.
• Look at replies. People often reply to their own main from an alt.
• Look at who the main account follows that has very few followers.

Method 3: X advanced search

X advanced search (open the search page and choose Advanced search) lets you filter posts. Useful operators:

Operator	What it finds
to:mia_codes	Replies sent to the main account
@mia_codes	Posts that mention it
from:mia_codes "alt"	Posts from the main that mention an alt
"exact phrase"	A catchphrase or unusual wording both accounts use

Twitter search by phone number

X has no public search box for phone numbers. Older guides mention finding people through contact sync. That depends on the other person's settings, and it is not a search tool. Sites that promise a "Twitter search by phone number" are usually selling generic people search data. Our post on phone number social media lookup explains what a number can and can't reveal.

How to tell it's really their second Twitter account

Look for at least two links: a shared photo, a link from one account to the other, the same unusual phrases, or posts at the same times about the same events. A similar handle alone proves nothing. Many people pick similar names.

On your phone

The Android app FreeUsername: Username Checker runs the same cross-site search. Or visit FreeUsername.com.
