How to Search Telegram by Username
By WhatsMyName Apps team · · 5 min read
Telegram is one of the few big messaging apps where you can reach someone without their phone number. The username is what makes that possible. If a person, group or channel has a public username, you can find it in seconds. If they do not, there is no search that will turn them up, and that is by design.
What a Telegram username is
A Telegram username is an optional public name, written with an @, such as @mia_codes. Telegram's FAQ describes it plainly: once you set one, other users can find you by it and you appear in search under global results. They can also message you without knowing your number.
A few facts from the FAQ shape how searching works:
- Usernames are optional. Plenty of people never set one.
- They use a-z, 0-9 and underscores, and they are case-insensitive.
@MiaCodesand@miacodesare the same account. - Users, groups, channels and bots share one pool of names. A username might lead to a person, a public group, a channel or a bot.
- When someone finds you by username and you reply, neither side sees the other's phone number unless your privacy settings allow it.
The character rules and minimum length are listed on our Telegram username checker page.
Method 1: open a t.me link
Every public username has a web address:
t.me/username
Telegram also supports username.t.me. Open either one on a phone with Telegram installed and the app opens the chat directly. On a computer, the page shows a preview with the name, picture and a button to open it in Telegram. For a channel or public group, the preview often includes the description and member or subscriber count.
This is the most reliable way to check a specific username. If you see a preview, the name is in use. If you get a generic Telegram page with no profile, nothing public is using that name right now.
Method 2: global search in the app
In the Telegram app, tap the search box at the top of the chat list and type the username. The results are split: chats you already have come first, followed by global results, which are public usernames across Telegram that match what you typed.
Tips for better results:
- Type the username without the @, exactly as the person gave it to you.
- Partial matches do appear in global results, but popular channels with similar names tend to crowd out small personal accounts. Typing the full username is far more reliable.
- Display names are not usernames. Searching "Mia" will match chats and public accounts, but not a private person whose display name happens to be Mia and who has no username.
Once you open a result, check the profile before you message. The username, bio and, for channels, the post history tell you whether it is the account you were looking for. Impersonation is common on Telegram, especially for crypto projects and well-known channels. Scam copies often add an underscore or swap a letter.
When someone has no username
If a person never set a username, you cannot find them by searching. Telegram's FAQ says people can contact you if they know your phone number, if you share a group, or if you have a public username. Nothing else.
So if your search turns up nothing, the person may simply not have a username. Ask them to share their t.me link or username directly. Telegram also lets people create a phone-number link like t.me/+ followed by their number in international format, but it only works if their privacy settings allow others to find them by number.
Collectible usernames and Fragment
Telegram has two kinds of usernames. Basic ones are free and handed out first come, first served. Collectible usernames, according to Telegram's FAQ, work the same way in search and links but can be bought and sold through third-party platforms like Fragment, with ownership recorded on the TON blockchain. Owners can assign a collectible to a chat, sell it, or hold it unused. One account, group or channel can have several collectible usernames pointing to it.
For searching, this means two things:
- A short or dictionary-word username that shows nothing at
t.memay still be owned as a collectible, just not assigned to any chat right now. - Telegram says it cannot assign collectible usernames. If one you want is taken, the only route is to see whether it is listed for sale.
For basic usernames, Telegram's FAQ describes a request route through @Username_bot when a name is taken. It applies only in specific cases, such as when you hold the same name on at least two of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or when the name sits on an unused bot or channel.
Checking the same handle on other sites
Telegram usernames often match the handles people use elsewhere. To see where a handle appears beyond Telegram, the WhatsMyName Apps username search checks one name across 3,165 sites at once. It is free and needs no sign-up, and the username is not stored or logged. Each site comes back as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown. Those are leads to confirm by hand: a matching handle on two sites does not prove one owner.
If you are claiming a name for a new channel, test it on the Telegram checker first, then confirm in Telegram's settings, which checks availability as you type. Our post on protecting a brand name on social media covers locking down the same handle across platforms. WhatsApp is adding usernames too; see how WhatsApp usernames work for how its approach differs.
WhatsMyName Apps is not affiliated with Telegram or Fragment. Their names and trademarks belong to their owners.
