Twitch Username Search: Find Channels and What Name History Shows
By WhatsMyName Apps team · · 5 min read
On Twitch, a username and a channel are the same thing. Your username is your address, twitch.tv/username, and it is what viewers type to find you. That makes searching by username easy. It also means that when a streamer renames, old links stop working and people lose track of them.
Here is how to find a channel by username, and what Twitch actually tells you about a channel's past names.
Find a Twitch channel by its URL
If you know the exact username, the fastest route is the address bar:
twitch.tv/username
If a channel exists under that name, you get the channel page, live or offline. If nothing is there, Twitch shows a page saying the content is unavailable. That can mean the name was never used, the channel was renamed, or the account was suspended or closed. The page does not say which.
Twitch usernames are not case-sensitive in the URL, so twitch.tv/MiaPlays and twitch.tv/miaplays go to the same place. Capital letters you see on the channel come from the display name, which is covered below.
Use Twitch's search bar
When you only know part of the name, use the search bar at the top of Twitch. It searches channels, categories and live streams at once. Results favor live and popular channels, so a small or offline channel can sit far down the list or only show up when you type most of the name.
A few habits help:
- Type the most distinctive part of the name, not the common word. "zephyrgg" beats "plays".
- Open the full results page rather than relying on the dropdown, and look at the channels section.
- If you know what they stream, search the category and browse who is live in it.
Username vs display name
Twitch has two names per account, and mixing them up causes most failed searches.
- The username (sometimes called login) is what appears in the URL. It is unique.
- The display name is what shows in chat and on the channel. On Twitch it is the username with whatever capitalization the streamer picks. Accounts using Twitch in Chinese, Japanese or Korean can also add a localized display name in those scripts.
If a display name uses characters you cannot type into a URL, look for the username on the channel page or in the address bar once you reach it. Twitch's help center explains the details in its article on display names.
What Twitch shows about username history
Short version: very little. Twitch channel pages do not display a list of a streamer's previous usernames, and there is no official Twitch tool that looks one up. If a channel renamed, the only public trace on Twitch is the new name itself.
Twitch's username rename and transfer policy explains why old names vanish so cleanly. At the time of writing, it says:
- You can change your username once every 60 days, and not during a live broadcast or while a VOD upload is still pending.
- Your channel URL will not redirect to your new name. Links to
twitch.tv/oldnamesimply stop pointing at you. - Your followers, followed channels, view count, subscriptions and settings carry over. Only the name changes.
What happens to the old name
Once a non-Partner changes name, the old one is not free straight away. Twitch says abandoned usernames take at least 180 days before anyone can reclaim them through self-service. If the account was a Twitch Partner, the old username is never made available to anyone else.
That has a practical side when you search. A dead twitch.tv/oldname page during those months does not mean the name is up for grabs. And if a channel appears under an old name after that period, it may be a completely different person who claimed the name later. Do not assume the new owner is the streamer you remember.
Finding a streamer who renamed
Since Twitch does not redirect, you have to rely on what the streamer shared. Look at:
- Their other profiles: YouTube, X, Instagram or a Discord server they ran. Streamers usually announce a rename there.
- The channels you follow. A rename keeps your follow, so a followed channel will appear in your list under its new name.
- Clips and VODs you saved. They stay attached to the channel and show the current name.
If you know the streamer's handle from elsewhere, the WhatsMyName Apps username search checks it across 3,165 sites at once, which can surface a social profile that links to the new channel. It is free, needs no sign-up, and takes up to five usernames per search. Results are Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown. Treat each one as a lead and open it yourself, since two people can share the same handle on different sites.
Before you rename your own channel
Because old links break and renames are limited, check the new name properly before you commit:
- Test it on the Twitch username checker, which also lists Twitch's naming rules.
- Confirm in Twitch's own settings. The rename field shows a green check when a name is available, and that is the final answer, since banned and recently released names can be held back.
- See whether the same handle is free on the other platforms where you post clips. The name checker adds domain availability too.
- Update every link you control after the change, including panels, social bios and your Discord.
