Remove Yourself from People Search Sites in Canada

People search sites in Canada, and the many US sites that also list Canadians, can show your name, phone number, past addresses and relatives. Removing yourself takes some patience, but most of it is free. This guide gives you the general method that works on most sites, plus the Canadian rules you can lean on. We can't promise a site will remove you, and some never fully do.
The general method, step by step
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Find your listings | Search your name with your city or province, your phone number and your email |
| 2. Use the opt-out | Look for "opt out", "remove my information" or "privacy" in the site footer |
| 3. Write if there's no form | Email the privacy contact named in the privacy policy |
| 4. Cite your rights | Mention PIPEDA, or Quebec's law if you live there |
| 5. Escalate | Complain to the OPC (or the CAI in Quebec) if you get no fair answer |
| 6. Check again | Repeat your search every few months |
1. Find your listings
Search your full name in quotes plus your city, then your phone number and email. Note every site that shows you, with the exact page address. Our list of free people search sites explains how these sites work and which kinds of records they pull from.
2. Use the site's own opt-out
Most large sites have an opt-out page. You usually find your record, paste its link into a form and confirm by email. Use a spare email address if you can. We have step-by-step guides for several common sites:
Our main guide to removing yourself from people search sites covers the wider process.
3. Canada411 and phone directories
Canada411 and similar directories often get listings from phone companies. Each directory runs its own removal process, and the process can change, so look for its privacy or removal page and follow the current steps there. If the listing came from your landline, asking your phone provider for an unlisted number can stop it at the source. Ask your provider whether there is a fee.
4. Cite your rights
If a Canadian business won't answer, write to its privacy contact. Under PIPEDA you can ask what personal information it holds about you and how it got it. In Quebec, Law 25 gives extra rights, including a de-indexing related right in some cases. Keep the tone plain and factual. Our guide to PIPEDA privacy rights and Quebec Law 25 explains what you can ask for.
5. Escalate to the OPC
If you don't get a fair answer, you can file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. In Quebec, the regulator is the CAI. Sites based outside Canada may be harder to reach this way, so the site's own opt-out is still the first step.
Clean up search engine results too
Removing a listing doesn't instantly remove the search result. Google offers a "Results about you" tool in some places, which lets you ask it to drop results showing your phone, address or email. Check your Google Account to see what's available to you.
Check what else is out there
People search sites are only part of the picture. Run your handles through our free username search, powered by our own FreeUsername™ search engine, across 3,450+ sites. Our email breach check, coming soon, will show which breaches it appeared in and what leaked. For one network at a time, try the Facebook username check. The full routine is in our digital footprint check for Canada.
On Android, the free FreeUsername: Username Checker app does the username search from your phone. Our engine lives at FreeUsername.com.
A note on looking up other people
This guide is about removing your own data. If you use people search sites to look up someone else, do it for a fair reason, never to stalk or harass anyone, and don't use the results for decisions about jobs, housing or credit.
FAQ
Is it free to opt out of people search sites in Canada?
Most sites' own opt-outs are free. Paid removal services exist, but you can do the same steps yourself.
How do I remove my Canada411 listing?
Look for the directory's current privacy or removal page and follow its steps. If your number came from a landline listing, ask your phone provider about an unlisted number.
Can the Privacy Commissioner make a site remove me?
The OPC handles complaints about how businesses deal with personal information. What it can do depends on the case and where the site is based. Check the OPC's site for how complaints work.
Why did my listing come back?
People search sites refresh their data from many sources, so a removed record can reappear. Search yourself again every few months.
Is WhatsMyName Apps free?
