Letterboxd Username Checker
By WhatsMyName Apps · Reviewed · Editorial policy
Letterboxd uses a single username space for the whole world, first come, first served. Your username is the last part of your profile link, letterboxd.com/name. Type a name below and we build the link for you to open, then read the change rules from Letterboxd's help center.
Letterboxd username rules
| What the username is | The part after letterboxd.com/ in your profile link. Letterboxd has one username space across all countries. |
|---|---|
| Allowed characters and length | Not published in Letterboxd's help center. |
| Change frequency | Free members once a year; Pro members and above once every 30 days. Letterboxd considers exceptions for privacy concerns or deadnames. |
| Old usernames | After a change there is a cooling-off period of a few weeks when nobody else can register your old name and you can switch back. After that, anyone can claim it. |
| Unavailable names | Some names are reserved by Letterboxd, and some still belong to deactivated accounts, so a name can be unavailable with no profile showing. |

How to check a Letterboxd username
- Type the username as it appears after letterboxd.com/ in a profile link.
- We do not fetch Letterboxd from our server. In our October 2026 test it answered every automated request with a bot challenge (HTTP 403), for real and made-up names alike, so the result says "Can't verify" and links to the profile.
- Open the link in your browser. A profile with films and lists means the name is taken. A "can't find the page" message means no visible profile uses it.
- A missing profile does not prove the name is free. Reserved names and names held by deactivated accounts look the same, so the settings page has the final word.
Letterboxd username taken? What you can do
- Add a word about what you watch or a short number: janefilms, janewatches, jane2026.
- If you are waiting for someone to rename, keep in mind the cooling-off period: an old name stays locked for a few weeks before anyone else can register it.
- If the username matches your registered trademark, Letterboxd accepts proof of the mark, but it will not settle disputes that need a detailed trademark analysis.
- Your display name can differ from your username, so you can still show your full name on your profile.
How to change your Letterboxd username
- Sign in on the Letterboxd website. Username changes are done there, not in the apps.
- Open Settings (letterboxd.com/settings/) and edit the Username field.
- Save the change. Your profile link moves to the new name.
- Plan ahead: you cannot change it again for a year on a free account, or 30 days on Pro.
Reserved and restricted names
Letterboxd keeps some usernames for its own future use, and some names still belong to deactivated accounts. It does not publish a list. Usernames are first come, first served worldwide; trademark owners can send proof, but Letterboxd will not decide disputes that need detailed legal analysis.
Tips
- If you share your profile link in bios, pick a username you will keep. Free accounts get one change a year.
- Within the cooling-off period you can switch back to your previous name, which helps if you regret a change.
- To find your own username, look at the site header next to your avatar, or the action sheet on your profile in the apps.
Frequently asked questions
How often can I change my Letterboxd username?
Free members can change it once a year. Pro members and above can change it once every 30 days. Letterboxd considers exceptions for privacy concerns or deadnames.
Why does the checker say it can't verify Letterboxd?
Letterboxd answered every automated request from our server with a bot challenge in our October 2026 test, so we cannot tell a real profile from a missing one. Open the link we give you in your browser.
A Letterboxd username shows as unavailable but has no profile. Can I have it?
Usually not. Letterboxd says it reserves some names for itself and some still belong to deactivated accounts.
How do I find someone on Letterboxd?
If you know their username, open letterboxd.com/username. Otherwise use the search on Letterboxd itself. This page does not look up people by real name.
