DeviantArt username rules

Length	3 to 20 characters.
Allowed characters	Letters A-Z and a-z, numbers 0-9 and hyphens. No spaces, no names made only of numbers, and no hyphen at the start or end.
Uniqueness	You cannot use a name that exists or has existed. That includes your other accounts, deactivated and inactive accounts, and names other deviants or groups had before.
Change limit	Core members can change their username once every six months. You cannot go back to a name you had before, but you can change the capitalization of your current one.
After a change	Watchers are notified, your pages update, and links with the old name redirect to the new one. Old mentions still show the old name.

How to check a DeviantArt username

Type the username without deviantart.com/. A name under 3 or over 20 characters, or with characters other than letters, numbers and hyphens, cannot exist.
We try deviantart.com/<name>, but in our October 2026 test DeviantArt answered every request from our server with HTTP 403, real or made up. The result says "Can't verify" and links to the page.
Open the link in your browser. A profile means the name is taken. A 404 page means no active account has it, but the name may still be blocked because someone used it before.
The final test is the sign-up form, or Account Settings for Core members changing their name.

DeviantArt username taken? What you can do

Join words with a hyphen (mia-draws) or add a topic: miasketches, mia-art. Hyphens cannot go at the start or end.
Do not wait for a name to free up. DeviantArt does not reuse names held by deactivated or inactive accounts.
DeviantArt staff will not change a username for you, even if you ask, so pick a variation.
If an account is impersonating you or reposting your art, report it to DeviantArt.

How to change your DeviantArt username

Username changes are a Core membership benefit, once every six months.
Open Account Settings and go to the My Account section.
Enter the new username and save.
Your watchers get a notice, and old links redirect to your new name.

Reserved and restricted names

DeviantArt does not publish a reserved list, but any name that an account or group has ever used is off the table, including your own past names.

Tips

Because old names are never released, a username change is final. You cannot switch back later.
You can always change the capitalization of your name, so Mia-Draws and mia-draws are the same account.
