Venmo username rules

Length	5 to 30 characters.
Allowed characters	Letters and numbers, plus hyphens and underscores. No other special characters.
Where to change it	In the app under Me, Settings, Account, Profile, or on the web in your profile settings.
Visibility	Payments can be Public, Friends only or Private, and you can hide your friends list. Venmo always uses the stricter setting of the two people in a payment.

How to check a Venmo username

Enter the username without the @. Under 5 or over 30 characters, or with a period or other symbol, cannot be a Venmo username.
We load account.venmo.com/u/<name>. A profile page gives Found and a "page does not exist" answer gives Not found.
Found only means a profile uses that exact username. It does not tell you who is behind it, so it is not proof that you have the right person.
To claim a name, the username field in your own profile settings is the final test.

Venmo username taken? What you can do

Add a hyphen or underscore between first and last name: mia-lopez, mia_lopez_22.
If you run a small business, a business word such as studio or shop makes it clear to customers who they are paying.
Venmo does not publish a process for releasing usernames, so pick a variation rather than waiting.

How to change your Venmo username

In the app, tap the Me tab, then the Settings gear.
Tap Account, then Profile, and edit your username.
Tap Save. On the web, use the profile page in your account settings.
Tell people who pay you regularly, so they do not send money to an old or similar name.

Reserved and restricted names

Venmo does not publish a list of reserved usernames. Its scam guidance warns that scammers change their username and profile photo to impersonate someone you know, which is why a matching name alone is never enough to trust a payee.

Tips

Before paying, tap the profile and look at the details Venmo shows, then confirm with the person through another channel if anything looks off. Venmo recommends only paying people you know.
When you pay by phone number or email, Venmo suggests asking the recipient to confirm that it is verified on their account.
Set your payments to Private or Friends only if you do not want strangers seeing who you pay.
