Username generator: ideas that fit the rules, ready to check
Most generators stop at a list of names, and you find out later that half of them are taken. Here you get ideas for Instagram, TikTok, Roblox, Discord, Twitch, X and more, each one sized to that platform's rules, and a Check button that shows where the name is already in use.
How to use the username generator
- Pick a platform. The generator uses that platform's rules. Choose "Any site" if you want one name for everywhere.
- Pick an account type. Personal, Creator, Business or Gamer changes the prefixes and suffixes it tries, such as "hq" for a shop or "gg" for a gamer.
- Type a few words. Your nickname, a hobby, your brand or a favourite thing. Two to four words work best.
- Press Check on the ideas you like. That runs our username search, so you can see which sites already have the name before you sign up.
Example: on TikTok, as a Creator, with the words night owl coffee, you might get nightowl_tv, hey.coffee or owl_coffee42. Press Check on nightowl_tv and the search shows each site as Found, Not found or Blocked. Some big platforms, Instagram and Threads among them, can't be checked automatically, so confirm those in the app itself.
Username rules by platform
The generator only suggests names that fit these limits. They come from each platform's own help pages, listed on our checker pages.
| Platform | Length | Allowed besides letters and numbers |
|---|---|---|
| 3–30 | period, underscore | |
| TikTok | 2–24 | underscore, period |
| X (Twitter) | 5–15 | underscore |
| YouTube | 3–30 | underscore, hyphen, period |
| Discord | 2–32 | underscore, period |
| Roblox | 3–20 | underscore |
| Twitch | 4–25 | underscore |
| Snapchat | 3–15 | underscore |
| 3–20 | underscore, hyphen | |
| 3–30 | underscore | |
| GitHub | 1–39 | hyphen |
| Bluesky | 3–18 | hyphen |
| Telegram | 5–32 | underscore |
| Minecraft | 3–16 | underscore |
| Fortnite | 3–16 | underscore |
| Xbox | 3–15 | nothing (no symbols) |
| Mastodon | 1–30 | underscore |
| Tumblr | 1–32 | hyphen |
Some platforms add extra rules: Roblox and Snapchat allow only one symbol per name, and Snapchat names must start with a letter. The checker page for each platform has the full list.
Tips for a username that lasts
- Use the same name everywhere. Followers find you faster. Our format study found that plain letters and numbers work on every site we track, dots and hyphens on only about 41%, and 20 characters is the safe maximum.
- Leave out private details. A birth year, surname or school in a handle makes you easier to find. See our digital footprint check.
- Say it out loud. If you have to spell it twice, it is too hard to remember.
- For a business, stay close to the brand. Add a short word like "hq" or "shop" only if the exact name is gone, and check the name isn't someone else's trademark.
- Claim it everywhere at once. Once you pick a name, use the name checker for domains and big platforms, then sign up the same day.
Frequently asked questions
How does this username generator work?
You pick a platform and an account type and type a few words about yourself. The generator mixes your words with short prefixes, suffixes, separators and numbers, then drops any idea that breaks that platform's length or character rules. It runs in your browser, so nothing is sent anywhere until you press Check.
Are the generated usernames available?
Not necessarily. The ideas are not checked when they are made. Press Check next to an idea to search it on 3,450+ sites and see where it is already taken.
Does it use AI?
No. It uses simple word rules, so the same words give the same ideas, and More ideas gives a fresh set. That also means it never invents words you did not give it, apart from a short list of common prefixes and suffixes such as "the", "hq" or "gg".
Which platforms does it support?
18 platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Discord, Roblox, Twitch, Snapchat, Reddit and GitHub, plus an "Any site" option that keeps names to 3-20 letters, numbers and underscores so they work almost everywhere.
Is my description stored?
No. The words you type stay in your browser. Only when you press Check is that one username sent to our search, which does not store it.
What makes a good username?
Short, easy to say out loud, the same on every platform you use, and free of personal details like your birth year or home town if you want privacy. Our guide to choosing a unique username goes deeper.
